Gaza Aid Tragedy: UN Demands Probe After Deadly Shooting by Israeli Forces

The Israeli military has stated that it opened fire on a group of individuals in Gaza who allegedly strayed from designated humanitarian aid routes, claiming some were deemed suspicious. The incident, which is currently under investigation, reportedly occurred as civilians gathered to receive food assistance.

This comes just a day after a similar incident in which three people were killed. On Sunday (June 1), at least 31 Palestinians reportedly lost their lives in another aid-related tragedy.

Earlier the same day, Israel confirmed that three of its soldiers were killed in northern Gaza during ongoing clashes. The deaths occurred as part of Israel’s continued military offensive against Hamas, which has left large swaths of the territory in ruins.

In a controversial move, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a U.S. and Israeli-backed group, began distributing aid independently of the UN and other international agencies. The organization claims to have safely delivered food via 21 trucks earlier in the day.

However, the UN and multiple humanitarian groups have condemned the initiative, calling it a violation of international humanitarian protocols. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) denied targeting civilians directly and asserted that lethal force was used only after warning shots were ignored by individuals who allegedly deviated from the approved path.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over the incident, calling the loss of life among civilians waiting for aid "tragic and unacceptable." He urged an independent investigation into the events.

Since Israel's military campaign began on October 7, 2023, over 54,000 people have reportedly been killed in Gaza. The humanitarian crisis continues to escalate, with Palestinian civilians facing deadly risks even while seeking aid.
