Bengaluru, India’s ‘Silicon Valley’, Devastated by Severe Floods
Heavy Rains Paralyze Bengaluru: City Records Highest Rainfall Since 2011, IT Firms Shift to Remote Work
According to the Meteorological Department, Bengaluru received up to 100 mm of rainfall on Monday — the highest since 2011. Officials noted that such intense downpours are rare for the city. Streets across the city were flooded, with knee-deep water stranding numerous vehicles.
The situation has forced major tech companies to ask employees to work from home. The Karnataka state government has identified 210 flood-prone areas and claims that emergency teams are working around the clock to restore normalcy. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar assured citizens, saying, “There is no need to panic.”
However, frustration is growing on social media, where residents accuse authorities of repeated inaction, pointing out that the city floods every year during monsoon rains with no long-term solution in sight.
Residents of the city allege that Bengaluru’s infrastructure becomes most vulnerable during the monsoon season. They claim that under the guise of new development projects, lakes, canals, and wetlands are being filled in, leaving no outlet for rainwater. As a result, even moderate rainfall leads to flooding.
The opposition party, BJP, has blamed the state government for the situation and demanded ₹1,000 crore in emergency relief. However, the government says these issues have existed for many years and efforts are underway to resolve them.
