Greenland’s Prime Minister Ready to Talk with Donald Trump

Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has expressed readiness to engage in discussions with former U.S. President Donald Trump. During a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen on Friday, January 10, Egede addressed questions about potential communication with Trump.

When asked if there had been any contact with Trump, Egede clarified, “No, there hasn’t been any communication, but we are open to discussions.”

This statement follows Trump’s controversial remarks about potentially using military force to take control of Greenland, which he made during his presidency. Egede described Trump’s comments as “serious” and reiterated that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.” He emphasized the importance of international collaboration, particularly with allies like the United States.

Greenland’s Autonomy and Aspirations

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, was granted self-governance in 1979, and in 2009, a referendum gave it the right to declare independence. Egede, a pro-independence leader, reaffirmed Greenland’s desire for self-determination.

“Everyone can understand the yearning for freedom and the desire to live in your own home,” Egede said. “We do not want to be Danish or American; we want to be Greenlandic.”

Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen acknowledged the strong aspirations for independence among many Greenlanders, calling them a legitimate desire.

Trump’s Greenland Proposal

Both Frederiksen and Egede previously rejected Trump’s 2019 proposal to purchase Greenland. Egede reiterated that Greenland’s future lies in the hands of its people, emphasizing their commitment to forging strong partnerships without compromising their autonomy.

This press conference underscores Greenland’s ongoing journey toward self-governance while maintaining cooperative ties with international allies.
