Border Vigil: Citizens Stand Guard as Political Parties Remain Silent

Border Vigil Citizens Stand Guard as Political Parties Remain Silent

The responsibility of guarding the nation's borders has traditionally rested with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). However, over the past 15 years, weakened governance has left BGB repeatedly outmaneuvered by India. Recent events, however, mark a shift, as ordinary citizens, without any political backing, stood by BGB to protect the nation’s land amidst escalating border tensions.

Reports indicate that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) attempted to construct barbed wire fencing along the Bangladesh-India border, violating international border laws. This attempt was thwarted by BGB intervention on Wednesday (January 8) at the Bostabar border in Dhamoirhat Upazila of Naogaon. Following the incident, tension has been running high in the border area.

In a remarkable display of patriotism, thousands of ordinary Bangladeshis joined BGB in defending the border. This proactive stance, traditionally expected from political parties, was glaringly absent. Neither the BNP nor Jamaat, nor any other political faction, showed any activity regarding the issue. This has raised questions among citizens about the role of political parties in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty.

Photos and videos of courageous citizens went viral on social media, capturing their chants: “We’ll give our lives, but not an inch of our land,” and “We’ll defend our land with our blood.”

Netizens voiced strong sentiments. One user stated, “This country no longer belongs to Sheikh Hasina; it belongs to 170 million people. For the past 15 years, Hasina has been submissive to India. But now, the time for subjugation is over.”

Another user, Hafizur Rahman Robel, remarked, “This is true patriotism. Salute to the brave warriors. The people of this land are ready to sacrifice everything for their beloved motherland.”

Similarly, Mirza Abbas wrote, “To protect our independence and sovereignty, 180 million Bangladeshis are ready to become martyrs. We will never bow to India. This nation was freed through bloodshed, not to tolerate Indian dominance.”

While many lauded the citizens’ bravery, some criticized political parties for their silence. Several observers opined that such a critical issue demands united action from all political parties to safeguard national sovereignty.
